Photo EFE Singing star Daddy Yankee officially launched his “Corazon guerrero” (Heart of a Warrior) foundation, an organization that will seek to help former inmates become law-abiding and productive members of society. “The person who wants to go forward sets out to change his life. I was able to find a change in my life and I thank the people who made me a leader and that were able to channel my life in (making) all the changes,” the self-proclaimed king of reggaeton told some 80 inmates Thursday at a youth correctional facility in Guaynabo, near San Juan. The foundation will organize educational workshops and establish programs that are meant to help former inmates make their transition back into society. The artist, to whom two young inmates at the institution dedicated a song, said he is a man “of few words, but a lot of action,” adding that after he fathered his first daughter at the age of 17 he was able to overcome the obstacles in his path. “We’re going ahead with our eye on the future. Young people like these motivate you to do this (so they can) make a new start in life. I only want to be a guide and path for them,” he said. The singer, who confessed that he was very close to being sent to prison himself, said that the idea of creating a foundation to help reinsert inmates into society was the result of “divine assistance and personal restlessness.” The secretary of Puerto Rico’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Miguel Pereira, thanked Daddy Yankee for his “generosity, resources, time and persuasive views and personality.” Daddy Yankee for the moment plans to get his foundation up and running in Puerto Rico, although he has not ruled out extending its work beyond the Caribbean island.
