On Thursday October 30th, members of the San Jose city government helped cut the ribbon on El Paseo Studios, a 98 unit studio apartment complex. The timing of the project’s opening couldn’t possibly have come at a worse time.

In the summer of 2002, during a runway dedication ceremony, Ron Gonzales publicly announced his intention to rename San Jose International Airport after Norman Y. Mineta. This announcement came as a surprise to many, including some of the members of the city council.

The City of San Jose faces what is likely to be the largest budget deficit in city history. It is indeed ironic, that the erection of an opulent new government complex continues at a time when the funding of basic city services is threatened, and local school districts face dramatic cuts.
